What is the Apprenticeship Growth Matrix?

The matrix can be used to place apprenticeship providers, standards, and SSAs into four distinct quadrants based on two critical factors:

Achievement Rate (X-Axis)

How well learners perform in apprenticeship programmes against the average annual published QAR.

Growth in Number of Starts year on year (Y-Axis)

The rate at which the programme/provider/SSA attracts new participants.

Strategies for Scaling Challenges

Scaling Challenges - Despite low achievement rates, they attract more learners

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • Analyse data to identify trends and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Develop statistical data models to RAG rate learners and predict likelihood of completion. 

Targeted Interventions

  • Identify disengaged learners early and provide personalised support to improve retention.
  • Offer additional tutoring, mentoring or well-being support to address specific needs.

Attendance and Engagement

  • Create engaging learning experiences using a variety of teaching methods, such as encouraging learners to share their experiences with their peers. 
  • Address absenteeism in a timely manner, encouraging regular attendance.

Engage with Employers

  • Ensure employers are aware of the time commitment required for learners to achieve.
  • Provide regular feedback on learner progress.
  • Develop an effective way of collating regular feedback from employers and adjust curriculum to match industry demands.

Engage High Achievers

Set Clear Expectations for Quality Work

  • Discuss the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to achieve high grades at the end point assessment.

Use Formative Instructional Practices

  • Continuously assess learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Adjust teaching based on their progress and learning needs.

Create Compelling Content

  • Develop a visually appealing website with clear information about the programme.
  • Use videos, infographics and success stories to engage potential learners.

Enhance Marketing and Visibility

  • Develop a strong online presence through a user-friendly website, social media and relevant platforms.
  • Highlight success stories, testimonials and positive outcomes to build credibility.

Collaborate with Employers and Learners

  • Partner with employers and industry associations to promote the programme.
  • Offer learners assistance in finding suitable roles.
  • Host workshops and webinars to showcase the benefits of the programme.
  • Attend career fairs, educational events and networking sessions.

Leverage Alumni Networks

  • Encourage satisfied achievers to refer others to the programme.
  • Alumni can share their positive experiences and act as brand ambassadors.

Continuous Improvement

  • Regularly assess and improve the programme’s curriculum, teaching methods and materials.
  • Develop an effective way of collating regular feedback from learners, such as through progress reviews, and address feedback to enhance overall quality. 

How can I use this in practice?
